In this article, I will teach you how to compost and why composting matters. Composting is a process that takes time, energy, and fuel, not to discourage you. Composting definitely can also be fun, rewarding, and definitely worth it!

Step 1. Get a bin or a bucket nothing fancy, but you can get fancy if you would like by buying a rolling composter. In this article, I will focus on a cheap or easy way to do it.

Step 2. Drill holes in the bottom, sides, and the lid of the bin this will allow for drainage and ventilation.

Step 3. Add a thin layer of shredded cardboard or paper. This layer will absorb excess liquid from the composting process and add carbon. Carbon helps to balance out the high nitrogen content in our food scraps.

Step 4. Add in your kitchen and backyard scraps.

Step 5. Stir your compost every 1-7 days. Stirring adds oxygen, so the compost breaks down aerobically.

What Can I and What Can't I Put In My Compost?

We recommend that you only add fruit and veggie scraps, along with bread, pasta, tofu, nuts, and outdoor scraps like grass clippings, leaves, and small twigs. We do not recommend that you add meat, dairy, or egg scraps, along with trash, glossy paper, envelope windows, cheese paper, or bioplastic.

Why Should I Compost?

We should compost because it is better for the environment. It helps to keep an emission out of our atmosphere called methane this is two times as bad as carbon emissions. Composting also alleviates some of the need for landfills, as it removes half of what we throw out every day.

Overall we believe that everyone should compost, as it helps fight climate change and leaves a brighter future for generations to come. If you want more articles like this one, come back to avenelzine.com each Sunday at 5 am MT.
